It has been covered many times, by greats including Elvis Presley, The Osborne Brothers, Bill Gaither, Loretta Lynn and many others. It is a poignant plea from a heart in a dark and lonely place, bordering on the transition from despair, through to hope, through to a quiet, confident faith.
