About Us![]() the cleftomaniacs was formed in winter 1992 by a group of enthusiastic amateurs who took a course in a cappella singing with Dale Caldwell at Sydney Community College in Balmain. Originally based in Darlington, we moved to our current rehearsal space in Waterloo when some of "The Trevors", another a cappella choir led by Dale, were incorporated into the group. In early 2002 Dale moved on to continue her solo career and Gary Smith joined us as Musical Director. Affectionately known as "The Cleffies", we sing many different styles of music: medieval Italian madrigals, Negro spirituals, folk, gospel and 20th century pop. In recent years we have performed at various community festivals, Club A Cappella at Eastside Arts, the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW), private parties, as well as our own concerts. Our most ambitious project to date was a production of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, in November 2004, complete with soloists from The Australian Opera School, a string quartet and a harpsichordist!
